Santa Monica, CA – June 19th 2009 – "I wanted to make something that was visually different from the gritty realism of all of our previous projects," said Ryan Benno, Project Lead and Art Director for Deadman's Tales. "Something that not only differed from the the traditional sci-fi and fantasy settings we had placed our games in, but in tone as well."
The art concept came from a very different place than previous games. "I'm a huge fan of classic Disney artists," said Ryan, "especially the work of Marc Davis. His concept work for both the Pirates of the Caribbean and Haunted Mansion attractions, created personalities that really made the immersive world of those rides." The stylized look of Marc Davis' work would be a challenge for the team of over 35 artists and designers. However, during a presentation to industry artists and designers from studios such as, Sony Santa Monica, Infinity Ward, Pandemic, EA-LA, Blur and Neversoft, Deadman's Tales was praised for having a very cohesive art style. "You don't see that in student projects." said a representative from Infinity Ward.
Along with the unique art and setting, Deadman's Tales is one of the most expansive and deepest multiplayer maps Wizards has ever created. Similar to World of Warcraft's Eye of the Storm, two teams must fight for capture control points in the port of Tortuga and lower their opposing teams health. Pitting pirates versus colonists, one team can destroy the town with their mighty ship, or have it destroyed by the other team summoning a kraken.
